If God is so good, why is there evil?

Last month our country was shocked and dismayed when thirty-two students and faculty at Virginia Tech were murdered. They were innocent people going about their daily routine of teaching, studying and looking forward to a promising future.

Our prayers go out to them, even now as the shock begins to subside and the cold dark reality stairs us in the face. The pain and anger of the victim’s family, the trauma of the wounded, the confusion of fellow students and faculty is heart-wrenching. Many will be scarred for life, and for some this tragic horror will alter their lives.

Many rightfully ask: why, how could this happen, how does such raw evil come to possess the soul of a young man to assassinate thirty-two people?  Where was God ... where is God ... is there a God? If God loves, how could he allow the expression of such hellish evil?

While we look for clues that motivated the killer's actions, and look at the profile of mass murderers, we forget—perhaps by choice—that man's sin nature is the root cause. Death, disease, violence, sickness came into the world as a result of sin. Sin is man's rebellion against God, our desire to live life on our own terms and conditions, not our creator's. The sobering fact is we all have the same sinful nature as Cho Seung-Hui. We all don't choose to express it through hate and murder, but we all have the same potential.

No doubt what contributes to this type of action is our violence-saturated culture, from music to movies, TV to computer games, violence is glorified.

Is it not ironic there is such an outcry of pain, horror, bewilderment and blame when school shootings take place? Yet little is said when a child's limbs are ripped from his tiny body and vacuumed out the womb, or burned by a saline solution, or just prior to birth the infant's brains are sucked out, crushing the skull then delivered and discarded. What message does this send along with the media? It says life is cheap and meaningless. This is the result of the teaching of evolution. Evolution tells us we are here by random chance with no purpose or future. It says we live, search for meaning die and become dirt ... how inspiring.

If America continues to systematically remove God from every sector of society we will see more evidence of death, violence and despair across America.

The truth is we were created in the very image of the God of the Bible, and we all have an eternal soul that will reside in either heaven or hell. Jesus wants all to be saved and was willing to suffer the pain, humiliation and death so we could be set free from sin and death. God didn't create death and suffering, it is the consequence of sin.

So, is God a loving God? Yes, he died for us when we didn't love him and he reaches out to you today. Find out how you can have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ ...
