Homepage Message: December 2008
We are people in great need. Yet how can this be when we are the wealthiest nation on earth? We have an abundance of food; harvests were very good this year. We have an abundance of energy, and an opportunity to expand our credit every time we go to the mailbox. Any ailment can be treated with a barrage of medication and state-of-the-art medical technology. Most families have more than one color TV, computer, phone, and entertainment center. We do not lack for any convenience or comfort. At the same time we are an over-medicated society with many taking anti-depressant drugs. Credit cards are maxed-out by many trying to keep up with the Jones’ and satisfy every want of their children. Schedules are squeezed tight with appointments, children’s after-school activities, hobbies, work around the home, and community involvement. For many there is too much month at the end of the check and not enough hours in a day. All this and more can lead to greater anxiety and stress. Perhaps you’ve heard people say all they want is to slow down, time to enjoy their family and smell the flowers. During this Christmas season the pace of life tends to ratchet up a notch with more appointments, expenses, expectations and outings. Some are already looking forward to January. 2,000 years ago Jesus came into a very stress-filled world loaded with anxiety and frustration and on the brink of war. The Jewish nation continued to look for a savior, the Son of God that was promised so long ago. Then one day there was exciting news to Joseph that he would name his son Jesus because He will save his people from their sins (Matthew 1:21). Today we need a savior from the effects of our sin. We need a savior who will rescue each of us from our own sin and its consequences of eternal death, addiction to sin and powerlessness against Satan. We have a great need all the world’s resources can’t provide; all the pills and surgery can’t change the darkened heart of man. Food, drugs and other addictions can only mask our true needs and longings. No religious or political leader can fix the mess in our world and nation. The answer lies in the birthday the politically correct are trying to forget. It is in the One who many are calling an ordinary man who later discovered the spark of divinity within us all. Nonsense! Christmas is indeed the celebration of the incarnation, God becoming a man whose sole purpose was to pay for our sin and rescue us from death and destroy the power of Satan. This was completely accomplished 2,000 years ago on an old Roman cross. He did it for you! May you have a blessed and Christ-filled Christmas. Your response is welcome. |
